The journey to a healthy body can be a difficult one. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed. We feel defeated. We feel dejected.

Sometimes, the lack of drive could be due to work or business stress.

Other times, it could be a drastic change in weather.

And don’t forget, it could be loneliness, family or relationship issues.

Regardless, it does not feel great.

My story is not unique at all. On the way to achieving my career, relationship and fitness goals, I have had several ups as well as downs. These are simply personal challenges we have to face every day in order to achieve better things, or to simply become better versions of ourselves.

This similarity in each and every one of us is the reason why compassion and empathy can go a long way in helping us acknowledge and appreciate the struggles of the person sitting right next to us.

But to me, what matters even more than external compassion is our individual mindset and approach to facing such challenges.

This brings me to my first point.

1. Understand that Discipline is More Important than Motivation.

Motivation is doing things because you WANT to. (Fun).

Discipline is doing things because you HAVE to. (Duty).

Not everything we do to achieve our goals has to bring us joy. Most of the work required is either tedious, difficult, boring or unrewarding. However, it is absolutely necessary.

It is very important to simply accept that fact and Deal With It.

Learn to leave your feelings out of working out or dieting, and try as best you can to stick to a consistent plan. Start small, then go big.

For example, go out for a short run once a week for 12 weeks. That is very manageable, even on a really busy or horrible week. And then start to go up from there. You are less likely to give up if you start from the smallest possible goal.

Sometimes you don’t even have to put in the work, but simply showing up would go a long way.

On the other hand, if you start by running 3 times a week, you might decide to only run 2 times on Week Four. That is how it begins. Next week, you will decide to run just once a week and then eventually give it up on Week 8.

2. Surround Yourself with People on the Same Path as You.

If you are interested in movies, join an online movie group or look for a meetup in your area and attend.

If you’re interested in running, join a running group in your area and link up with like-minded people.

The best part about this is that you have nothing to lose as a starter, and yet you will be surrounded by people you can learn a lot from.

Social Media sites such as Meta are an incredible resource for groups like these. And it is important to understand that such people just won’t come to you. You need to be proactive and find them.

What’s the harm in trying?

3. Have 1 Hobby at Least.

Hobbies are very important for our well-being because they give us joy. For others, hobbies provide fulfillment and peace.

The bottom line is that hobbies fill us with positive feelings.

If you do not have a hobby or cannot think of one, just think of anything you would keep doing and enjoying, whether you got paid for it or not.

Mine is cooking. I enjoy cooking and I do it often. I also enjoy trying new techniques and ingredients. I also listen to an unhealthy amount of music every day, because it makes me happy.

Try out different things for the sake of trying, until you find the one that feels almost natural to you.

4. Travel and Recharge.

Sometimes, all you need to inspire yourself is to change your environment for a short while.

When I’m down or stressed, I just up and leave town for a few days. A change of scenery usually brings out my sense of adventure, while allowing me to relax, find new purpose and recharge at the same time.

It does not have to be glamourous, visiting a place 2 towns over is more than enough.

If you can afford it, leave the country for a few days. If you’re somewhere cold, go somewhere warm for a few days and vice versa.

5. Make Love /Spread Love.

It is no secret.

Great Sex is incredible for motivation. If you have a partner in crime or a special love interest in your life, clear your schedule and take them out on a date.

Focus on the moment and Remain Present. The outcome will speak for itself.

6. Exercise.

A fit body is a fit mind.

Again, this is all about mindset and perspective. 

  • Exercise because you love your body, not because you hate it.
  • Exercise because you believe YOUR body deserves the best treatment,not because you need attention or approval from someone else.
  • Exercise because your only competition is You Today VS You Yesterday – not the local Adonis or Aphrodite.

As I mentioned above, Start Easy and Stay Consistent, because no one is going to achieve your goals for you.
